newspaper cuttingPolling took place yesterday in the by-election for North-West Durham, occasioned by the appointment of Mr Atherley Jones to be a Judge of the City of London Court.

There were forty-six polling stations for an electorate of 20,233.

The result was declared this afternoon as follows :–

A. WILLIAMS (Lib.) ………. 7,241
J. O. HARDICKER (Unionist) 5,564
C. H. STUART (Lab.) ……….5,026

Lib. maj. over Unionist ………. 1,677
Lib. maj. over Labour ………. 2,215
Unionist maj. over Labour      538
Total Progressive majority16,703
