At work as usual. German Air Raid on North East Coast1. One Zeppelin passed over Blyth, Wallsend and South Shields and over the sea again. No lives lost, very little damage done. Mother and Gertie down at Rowe’s. Joe and I went out for a walk and found that all the electric lights were out and the cars2 stopped in the streets. Charlie working until after mid-night and brought us news what it was.
Wikipedia’s summary of Zeppelin raids in 1915 notes only that “two Navy raids failed due to bad weather on 14 and 15 April.” ↩
“Cars”, as noted previously, means “tram-cars” at this period – powered through overhead electric cables. ↩
At work as usual. Directors’ meeting day and I was late for dinner. Choir practice at night. Walked up with Blaikie and talked at our door a long time.

At chapel all day and at Sunday School as usual. Mr Chadwick preaching and preached pretty well. Came up with Willie Peake at night and talked a long time. Played a bit and read. Fine night. Rumour of the loss of the Queen Mary and big sea fight1.
“Queen Mary…”: If referring to HMS Queen Mary, the last battlecruiser built by the Royal Navy before World War I, this rumour was clearly unfounded. Queen Mary was in fact sunk at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. ↩
At work as usual. Went down to Willie Wanless’s at night, and afterwards called at Mr Chadwick’s with the missionary statement, and received the Shiney Row money. Stayed till nearly 10 o’clock and talked a bit over church affairs. He was rather down in the dumps.
At work as usual. Called at Waggotts’ and got the missionary money and made it up. Did a bit shorthand1 .
See Pitman’s Shorthand. ↩
