At work as usual. Finished in decent time. Got papers in the afternoon and had walk at night with Willie Whittaker up to the foot of Penshaw Hill. Mrs Blaikie called to say that Ted†1 is ill and asking Marmie to play. Mrs Marshall† very ill.

At work as usual. Got up about 6 o’clock and went to the baths. Got on all right. Busy at work all day. Had walk at night.

At work as usual. Rained in the afternoon. Had walk at night.

At work as usual. Busy all day. Finished earlier a bit. Worked at shop books. Played a bit.
13 July 1915; Tuesday
At work as usual. Busy all day. Finished late, about 6 o’clock. A girl fell over Hendon Cliffs and there was a lot of bother before they got the ambulance. Had walk at night with Joe, after trying to square cash for shop.
12 July 1915; Monday
At work again. Pretty busy. Mr Scott away on his holidays. Tried to get shop books done up at night and had a walk last thing.
Returned to work again.
11 July 1915; Sunday
Got up late and walked round by the river side and Ford Paper Works with Joe. At Sunday School and chapel at night. A local preaching. Fine day. Had walk at night.
10 July 1915; Saturday
Got up about 6 o’clock and had a bathe. Enjoyed it immensely. Got 11.30, after a walk round the town. Ernie saw me off. Changed at Edinburgh, and arrived at Newcastle 4.50. Got late train to Sunderland and arrived 5.30. Had walk in the town at night with Willie Whittaker and Charlie.
Returned home from St Andrews.
9 July 1915; Friday
Got up about 9 o’clock. Fine day. Walked round various places, including along the sands. Didn’t read quite so much. Went up the tower again in the afternoon but didn’t see the girl with the brown shoes and stockings1. Had walk over the links and back by the Great Bridge Road last thing.
Possibly the same girl as ALL had met on the tower the previous day? ↩
8 July 1915; Thursday
Slept in. Went out about 9.30. Walked along pier and afterwards along the sands to the River Eden. In the afternoon went with Ernie down the subterranean tunnel and the bottle dungeon1 and up St Rule’s† Tower2. A girl spoke to us on the tower. Had a walk at night by myself while Hilda went to the pictures and Ernie minded Moira. Fine day again.

St Rule’s tower: St Rule’s tower (B) is located in the grounds of St Andrews Cathedral but predates it. The tower was originally ascended using ladders between wooden floors, but a stone spiral staircase was inserted in the 18th century.
