Continuation of Anniversary. Pretty good services and the evening service well attended. Mr Chadwick thanked Blaikie and didn’t mention Willie, and Willie’s playing had * *. It thundered in church at night. We had short walk and went to Whittakers’ to supper. Talked until nearly 11 o’clock. Willie and Lily in to supper too.

Sunday School Anniversary. Fine day. Mr Blaikie leading. Willie Marshall playing. Charlie sang a solo at night and a boy from St John’s Wesleyan choir sang two solos. He was very good. The service was successful. Good dinners at night. Decided to continue the service next week. Had walk at night with Ernie, Willie Whittaker, and Charlie. Sang the anthem “Send out thy light.”
7 June 1914; Sunday
Stayed off chapel in the morning through bad foot. At Sunday School and chapel at night. Stayed to sacrament. Had short walk afterwards with Willie, Charlie and Dora’s Charlie. Talked with Blaikie too. No lesson in the School. The weather a bit showery. Got wet in the afternoon. Read a bit. Played a bit.

At chapel and School as usual. Rather fine day but cold. Mr Bacon sang at night. Rev A L Broadfield preached and was very good, the best we’ve heard for a good while. Read some of Anna Karennina. Had walks as usual. Played a little bit. Another meeting about the trip and decided to go to Haydon Bridge.

Busy at work all day. Played a bit at night and read a bit. Went to the meeting. Joe Speed leading. Mr Lawson and Mr Mullens spoke. I played. Dick sang a solo.
10 May 1914; Sunday
Charlie off chapel and School all day. Lily at Chapel both morning and night. Had very short lesson at School. Walked out with Charlie, Jim Wilkinson and Willie Whittaker in the afternoon. Walked up Durham Road with Willie on Sunday night. Mr and Mrs Wiseman in after chapel. Father at Chapel in the morning. Fine day. Mr Best preaching, and preached particularly well in the morning. I read some “Anna Karenina.”

Got up about 7.45. Alf back again. Busy all day. Played the piano at night and went down to the class meeting and played there. Went into choir practice later. First anniversary practice. Dick spoke at the class meeting and Crabtree led. Charlie in bed all day. Dr Hickey called to see him. Dr Hickey told us his opinion on MacFadden and *.

Got up about 9 o’clock. At chapel and School as usual. Managed all right. Mr Chadwick preached very well. Had usual walks. Fine day. Read and played a bit. Charlie sang at the men’s meeting.
29 April 1914; Wednesday
Got up about 7.45. In good time for work. Mr Aitken in rather bad temper and Frank the same. Finished in good time. Aunt Mary to tea. Did a bit Pelman1. Played very little. Went down to meeting with Joe and Mr Chadwick called upon me to pray in the meeting. Walked round with Joe and talked about Pelman course. Had a bath. Went to bed shortly after 11 o’clock.
28 April 1914; Tuesday
Got up well before 8 o’clock. Busy all day. Finished about 6 o’clock. Read a little. Charlie got Toreador’s Song1 and I played it through. Did a bit Pelman2. Went to practice late. Decided on anthem “Send out thy light”. For the anniversary. Fine day.
Toreador’s Song: Possibly the aria “Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre” (“Your toast, I can return it to you”), popularly named The Toreador Song, from the opera Carmen, composed by Georges Bizet to a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy.
This aria is for bass-baritone, which was Charlie’s singing register (see note on Charlie on the Family page). Presumably Charlie wished to sing it and had chosen ALL as accompanist on this occasion. ↩
