Pretty busy at the office. Wrote for two boys to call. Two boys called and were interviewed by Mr Aitken with regard to the office-boy’s job. I shaved and played a bit, and went round by Gordon’s and paid his bill and placed an order. Called by the chapel and came up with Blaikie and Billy Whittaker. Talked to Blaikie until after 10 o’clock. Lay awake tonight with toothache.

At work as usual. Finished in good time. Hurried to the station and went to Boldon to the Northumberland Fusiliers Concert. Had pretty good time. The Misses Mackenzie, Misses Banks, Mr Davis and Charlie and Blaikie there. Spoke a long time to one to the soldiers. Very much interested in the camp of the soldiers. They were very well mannered and in good spirits.

At work as usual. Went up to the Ford Estate with Joe, and watched them drilling a short time. Met Blaikie on the way back and talked a short time. Called at the Echo office but no replies. Read and played a bit. Called for Willie Whittaker. Went to the Memorial Hall1. Mr Newrick’s choir there and Willie Whittaker and I were in the audience. Charlie on the platform. Willie got toothache.

At work as usual. Choir practice at night. Walked up with Blaikie and promised to look up some hymn tunes for him. Directors’ meeting. Mr Lawson not present.

At work as usual. Mr Blaikie telephoned to us there would be no choir practice at night. Played the piano. Read a bit.

Busy at work. Mr Kettle called for mother at night and we went to Garrett’s house and saw his parents. I went down to practice. Came round with Blaikie and Jim Wilkinson. A notice in the paper to the effect that the War Office is disposed to revive voluntary forces.

Still slack at work. Went to choir practice at night. Walked up with Blaikie and the others. Played the piano. Wrote letter to Robsons’ in reply to their written offer of employment for Father.
Germans defeated at Warsaw by Russians.

Hardly anything to do. Went down to practice with Charlie and Howard†. Came round with Blaikie and Willie Whittaker and Charlie.

Busy at work. Choir practice at night and got on pretty well. Tried one of the Messiah basses [bass solos?] through with Charlie for Blaikie. Nothing fresh from the front.
Russians beat Austrians at Lemberg. British Force captures 10 guns at Compeigne [sic].
