Rev. Wm. Chadwick was minister at the South Durham Street United Methodist Church and is mentioned in this capacity on numerous occasions in the early part of the diaries, prior to Arthur Linfoot’s enlistment in the RAMC. Little else is known about Rev. Chadwick save that he suffered the loss of a young daughter to an unknown illness in early November 1914.

At chapel and School as usual. Mr Chadwick preaching. Managed very well in both places. Went to Willie and Lily’s to tea. Mr and Mrs Peake there. Willie playing the organ. Blaikie on his holidays. Miss Hunter away too. A few hail showers and we didn’t walk far. Mr Chadwick announced that we would commence with the new hymns old hymn books next month and that Mr Flood will be preaching one day in August.

Conference of Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain proposed by Sir Edward Grey1 but Germany declines. 27th2.

Got up about 9 o’clock. Had bath. At chapel and Sunday School. Managed very well in Sunday School. Mr Chadwick preached a good sermon in the morning on quietness. Some very heavy showers. Mrs McPhail very ill and died at night. Talked to Dora’s Charlie a long time at the top of Vine Place. Had short walk round with our Charlie. Played a bit and read a very good article on philosophy.

Continuation of Anniversary. Pretty good services and the evening service well attended. Mr Chadwick thanked Blaikie and didn’t mention Willie, and Willie’s playing had * *. It thundered in church at night. We had short walk and went to Whittakers’ to supper. Talked until nearly 11 o’clock. Willie and Lily in to supper too.

Got up about 7.40. Tried a few of Charlie’s things through first thing. Not much to do at work. Got off a bit extra to go to the wedding. Merely saw them married and went back to work. All the rest of the family on the job. Father gave Lily away. Charlie sang a song. Little bit stiffness between the two families.

Mr Chadwick officiated. They went to Alnwick for their honeymoon.
Went down to chapel at night and hurried to finish off putting up the platform. Fine day.

Got up about 7.45. In good time for work. Mr Aitken in rather bad temper and Frank the same. Finished in good time. Aunt Mary to tea. Did a bit Pelman1. Played very little. Went down to meeting with Joe and Mr Chadwick called upon me to pray in the meeting. Walked round with Joe and talked about Pelman course. Had a bath. Went to bed shortly after 11 o’clock.

Busy at work. Finished about 5.30. Got missionary money squared up. Sat with Joe with his pupil. A letter in the paper referring to George’s and saying that the baths were to be opened as usual. I went along to Chadwicks’ last thing. Talked with him until after 10 o’clock. Read an interesting article on Frederick the Great and Voltaire1. Father ill again. Gertie went for Dr Blair and he came down again.

At work as usual. Went to Philharmonic Concert in the Victoria Hall1. All the principals were good. The Leeds Symphony Orchestra played. They rendered Rossini’s Stabat Mater and a miscellaneous programme. Gertie and Marmie, Willie Marshall and I were to go. Heard Toreador’s Song. Called in at Mr Chadwick’s with missionary money on the way to the social.

At chapel and School as usual. Wet day. The Boy Scouts at church in the morning. Mr Chadwick †warned us† to sing the National Anthem and had to stop Blaikie playing his voluntary. A Mrs Collins sang at night. The anthem was postponed on account of Edie Hunter being unwell. Had short walk at night.
