Arthur Linfoot was a member of the South Durham Street United Methodist Free Church in Sunderland, and a regular church-goer elsewhere when not in Sunderland. He records his attendance at chapel and church services of many kinds throughout his diaries.

18 September 1915; Saturday

Arrived home about 12.30 a.m. Didn’t expect me. Charlie and Joe at the station waiting for Ernie. Ernie arrived about half an hour later. Father in bed and didn’t know that we were all here. Got up about 9 o’clock. Telegraphed for an extension until reveille. Went to the office¹ and saw them there. Stayed in in the afternoon. Blaikie called and we had a few songs. Went to Grandmother’s later and saw them. Called into town at night and then went down to the chapel. Decorating for the Harvest Festival. Spoke to a good many people.

At church parade in the morning with over-coats. At Inwoods’ to tea and supper with Hoare and a lot of other soldiers. Played a bit. Miss Inwood away for the weekend.

Had church parade in the morning. To Inwoods’ to tea and supper. At church at night. Fine day. Spent afternoon at the Soldiers’ Home.

At church parade in the morning. Mr Cannon preaching and he was above ordinary missioner class, but a bit noisy. At the first men’s meeting in the afternoon and to Inwoods’ to tea and supper. At church at night again.

Had church parade in the morning. Rain good part of the day. Went up to Mr Warhurst’s to tea. At chapel at night. Stayed to sacrament and went to Mr Inwood’s¹ to supper. He set me to the barrack gates.

Up at 5.30 again. Went with Wesleyan church parade to a church near to the barracks. Enjoyed service. It reminded me of home. Stayed in in the afternoon, but went to the same church at night. A lady spoke to me before and after the service, and as I was coming away a young lady came up to me and asked me if I would go to the minister’s house to supper. I went with other 3 chaps. We had a pleasant time and I got my hand in at the piano. At Mr Inmore’s¹ house for the first time. Invited to a ramble tomorrow.

At chapel at night and at Sunday School as usual. Fell down in Chester Road and tore my trousers and hurt my knee a bit. Joe took children’s service and Marmie played for him. Willie Whittaker and Olive, Ada and Daisy to tea. Blaikie couldn’t come. Had usual walks, and a good walk round by Grindon at night.

At church as usual. Marmie playing organ. Mr Hammond preaching in the morning, and Mr Roope at night. Mr Roope preached a very good sermon, and Marmie managed all right. Had usual walks.

Got up late and walked round by the river side and Ford Paper Works with Joe. At Sunday School and chapel at night. A local preaching. Fine day. Had walk at night.

Finished reading She¹. Went to the Baptist chapel in the morning with Ernie. Walked along the golf links in the afternoon. Aggie Froxon and Alec Anderson to tea. Ernie said we were going to Hope Street church², but we went on to the sea front. Grand night.
