Arthur Linfoot was a member of the South Durham Street United Methodist Free Church in Sunderland, and a regular church-goer elsewhere when not in Sunderland. He records his attendance at chapel and church services of many kinds throughout his diaries.

Tried to sleep in the morning but didn’t get much. Went into park in the afternoon with Leishman and then to Inwoods’. At church at night as usual and to Inwoods’ to supper. Two sergeants of the Welsh Guard there and we stayed until late.

At church parade. Wrote letter to Betty and one to Ernie in the afternoon. Green and I went to Inwoods’ to tea and supper. At church at night. The choir sang “While she dwelt in the land” in the morning.

Up at 5.30. Turned guard out at Reveille. Relieved at 9.15. Went to bed. Had short walk and went to Inwoods’ for tea. At church at night and Inwoods’ to supper.

At church in the morning. Choir sang two anthems the Stainer They have taken away my Lord. At the Victoria Hall again in the evening and heard Jude¹ again. On stable picket at night.

Dismounted guard 9.15. * * sleeping rather badly. Lay in bed all morning. Went to tea at the Wesleyan church and heard sermon by Reverend Rew† Greenlands. Stayed to the tea and sat next to Franchie. Went with Green at night and heard the Crucifixion¹ at the Congregational church.

Visited Grandmother, Whittakers’¹ and Jack’s. Mr Dill’s funeral in the afternoon and I went over to see it with Ernie. Met George Crawford² who was in the procession. Climbed Ernie’s backyard wall to get in. Ernie took my photo³. Down to chapel at night and saw Mr Blott, Arthur Mullens, Billy and Edie and a few more.

“Whittakers'”: Willie Whittaker‘s family. Willie might not have been there, having enlisted in November 1915, although he was present a few days later. ↩

While apparently taken in a back yard, there is no other evidence to suggest that the photograph of ALL accompanying this entry (top) is the one taken by Ernie on this day although a very similar photograph of Ernie himself (bottom) also exists in a family collection. See also Family page. ↩

Up shortly after 6 o’clock. Church parade to Wesleyan church again. Mr Inwood preaching in the morning. Franchie in the choir. Went over to soldiers’ home in the afternoon and wrote a few postcards and a letter to Black. Had tea with Miss Chapman, Mrs Chadwick, a Miss Herschel and Metgrave. Went to the Wesleyan church. Mr Wednell† preached a good sermon and it didn’t do me any harm. At Inwoods’ to supper. Was introduced to some new soldiers. Met Franchie and Mrs Inwood. Walked from church with Franchie and talked a bit. Promised to go back Friday.
