Up about 7 o’clock and on duty at 8 o’clock. Not much to do all day, but fiddling about all day, no work of my own. Wrote letter home and went to C of E service and stayed to communion but didn’t partake of it. Had short walk afterwards with Billy Truman. Slept in headquarters billet again. Slept pretty well.

21 April 1918; Sunday
Reveille at 3.30. Marched off about 6 o’clock. Arrived at Proven 1 at about 10 o’clock. Had something to eat and then started work. Got small dressing room nearly ready when we had to take over D R S 2 and open up the big house. Very nice place. Worked pretty hard. Went into the village at night and were at the end of a church service. The parson very dry. Had good night’s sleep.

Up about 8 o’clock. Spent most of the day looking after equipment and unloading waggons. Went to Locre church service at night and enjoyed it. Fine night. Harvey and I slept with equipment.

Up about 6.30. On duty as usual. Finished at 6 o’clock at night and went to a C of E service. Had short walk afterwards.

Up about 6 o’clock. On duty in diarrhoea† ward at 7 o’clock. Found it a much busier ward than medical. Finished at 6 o’clock and had a walk with Harvey. Got in to the end of a service and had an interesting talk on the way back. Wrote letter to Ernie.
3 March 1918; Sunday
Up about 7 o’clock. In bed all day. Bad weather. Went to a C of E service at night and it was very good. They took a full musical service as they had an excellent orchestra (the Dorset†) with them. The orchestra also played a couple of selections which were very fine. I wrote to Charlie and Ernie last thing. Came on duty at about 8 o’clock and turned into bed about one o’clock. My face rather badly broken out round my mouth, but my general health much better.

Up about 7 o’clock. On parade at 9.15. On fatigue all day cleaning out hut for dispensary. Put on night duty. Went up to service but were just in time for the finish. Sat up until midnight and then got down to it.

Leishman: 73063 Corporal John Leishman of the RAMC, an old comrade of ALL’s from Sheffield, first mentioned on Easter Monday 1916 while ALL was stationed at the Hillsborough barracks. Sadly, nothing is known about the circumstances of this meeting with Leishman. ↩

Up about 7.45. Not much to do all day. Went to headquarters in the morning and again to a service at night with Harvey. Had interesting conversation coming back.
Received letter from Charlie dated 18/1/18.

Up about 7.30. On fatigue all day. Detailed for walking wounded post in the morning. Went to service at night and it was very good. John and Billy with us. Party came down the line smothered in mud.
